Now, as far as SAMSA is concerned, they do not differentiate between a boat and a PWC. Depending on where you are driving, a Category R or Category E license would suffice for a jet ski.
A word of advice? If you wish to drive a jet ski freely on the ocean waters, we highly recommend getting a Jet Ski above 3 metres in length. Jet skis under 3 metres will always be Category R vessels in SAMSA’s eyes. That means they will be restricted to zones designated for Category R vessels only.
Anyway, while a SAMSA skipper’s license is sufficient, some authorities may ask for extra training qualifications to operate a jet ski specifically. In such cases, an RYA PWC license will come in handy.
